Neela Aasmaa So Gaya

This one comes from Javed Akhtar.

From reel story's perspective, the song's all too obvious. Infact, one could have called this one a run-of-the-mill sad romantic number. No doubt, a classy one. But when one hears about the real life stories of the protagonists involved, travels back to the 80s, when bollywood was abuzz with the ongoing supposedly clandestine romance between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha...then this songs gathers a different essence altogether.

What pain, what sadness...and the utter hopelessness.

And when one juxtaposes the reel with the real, there stands a pair, cruelly betrayed at the hands of an entity that we call destiny.

Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na

It's Gulzar again. Yet again. That's how his magic works.

And the words today come a song from the movie Ghar. Oh...the incredibly sensuous chemistry between Rekha and Vinod Mehra. To top that, Gulzar's lyrics adds spice to their sizzling on screen romance. All the songs of this movie are a class in their own right...right from Aajkal paanv zaamen par nahi padte mere, Aap ki aankhon main kuch and Phir wahi raat hai...every song has a story of it's own...

Now coming back to the song...hmm..the thoughts in question actually. It's Tere bina jiya jaye na...I had first heard this song about a couple of years back...and must admit here that I had given it a little thought then. Just another romantic number...But thanks to Puraani Jeans on Radio Mirchi..and of course my penchant for Gulzar's romantic lyrics, I came back to this song again and again...each time discovering anew the beauty of it's sensuous lyrics.

Wow....I mean, can anything get more romantic than this...A wife expressing her love for her husband...and that too in his absence...so it's actually a genuine thought flow...and not the rhetoric 'I love you honey, I really do.' And the icing on the cake :

रेशमी रातें रोज़ ना होंगी,
ये सौगातें रोज़ ना होंगी
जिंदगी तुझ बिन रास ना आए
रास आए ना...

And then there's this hint too. That things would not always remain so mushy. There would be hard times too...Differences would crop up, beauty would loose its sheen..and romance would give way to petty fights over mundane inanities of life...But through all this we'll be together. Together we'll brave it all.

Thoda Hai, Thode ki Zaroorat Hai

Just when I thought that no thought has moved me of late, I came across this beautiful song from the movie Khatta Meetha. The song, Thoda hai, thode ki zaroorat hai tracks down the sundry and specific dreams of the many characters of the film. The song is beautiful, to say the least...one of the many gems of Kishore Kumar, with it's simple, soothing lyrics coming from none other than Gulzar. Rajesh Roshan is the man behind the music. The song goes :

Just when you think that nothing in life seems to be going your way...you don't have this and you don't have that...and mundane needs start gnawing deep into you, just then...this song make you realise the worth of all you still have. Makes you realise that all's not lost, and the world's still a beautiful place.

There's no preaching, no moral lessons to rise above the mercenary world...Just the assurance that life's going to get better. For sure. And then the lines :

हमने सपना देखा है
कोई अपना देखा है,
जब रात का घूंघट उतरेगा
और दिन की डोली गुजरेगी
तब सपना पूरा होगा....

This is giving words to very girl's ( well almost ) dream of that special someone. And again, the hinted assurance that love, your dream will come true. For sure. So dream on.

Naam Gum Jayega

This one is on the song I heard this morning. Naam Gum Jayega from the movie Kinara...Had seen this movie about a couple of months back...and that too after hearing another song from this movie. The song was Ek hi khwab kai baar dekha hai maine, and this song so intrigued me that I was tempted to find the context in which it was used.

Sensitively directed by Gulzar, this film with an off-beat storyline had brilliant performances by Hema Malini and Jeetendra. And coming to music, this film can boast of some real gems coming from R. D. Burman. Though Ek hi khwab would always remain my favourite, yet the lyrics of all the songs, coming from Gulzar himself, and the music leaves one marveling at the wonderful chemistry between Gulzar and Burman.

Coming back to the song Naam Gum Jayega....what particularly caught my wavering attention was the lyrics...specially these lines :

वक्त के सितम कम हसीं नहीं
आज हैं यहां, कल कहीं नहीं
वक्त के परे अगर
मिल गए कहीं...

Really beautiful...makes you realise the futility of your sadness....but if the sadness persists, you are again beautifully coaxed to come out of it, through the following lines :

जो गुज़र गई, कल की बात थी
उम्र तो नहीं, एक रात थी
रात का सिरा अगर
फिर मिले कहीं...

Na Jaane Kyun Hota Hai

So this first entry is about this song I heard last night. The song Na Jaane Kyun Hota Hai from the movie Choti Si Baat. Had first heard this song about three years back, in Mumbai.

Now that I am writing about this song, I want to thank my dear friend Poonam, for introducing me to this beautiful song. It was one lonesome night in our Lokhandwala apartment complex, where she broke into this song as we went about our midnight stroll. And to say the least, I was hooked to the lyrics, written by the little known lyricist Yogesh.

Though the entire song is extremely beautiful, I particularly like the following lines :

जो अनजान पल, ढल गए कल
आज वो रंग बदल बदल,
मन को मचल मचल, रहे हैं छल
ना जाने क्यों वो अनजान पल
सजेंगे ना मेरे नैनों में
टूटे रे हाए रे सपनों के महल
ना जाने क्यों...

These lines say so much about memories...happy, sad...cherished moments...lost dreams...about memories which keep coming back to us...and each time leaving us with a different set of interpretations.
